PROGRAMMA/PROGRAMM/PROGRAM

ORCHESTRA, at the BOLZANO FESTIVAL BOZEN, also means awakening, freshness and enthusiasm. The European Youth Orchestra EUYO, Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra GMJO, Haydn Orchestra of Trient and Bolzano and the orchestra of the Gustav Mahler Academy all represent an impressive range of contemporary orchestral culture. Antiqua starts, in keeping with tradition, with the EUYO, which, acting as European ambassadors under the direction of Andrew Litton, will give expression to a tragic moment in European history with Dmitri Šostakovič’s seventh symphony. In addition, the star violinist Renaud Capuçon will use his performance of Tschaikovsky’s violin concerto to translate Soviet cultural understanding back into the Russian music tradition. The GMJO - a much celebrated guest orchestra at the major European music festivals – will put Central European repertoire at the heart of its two concerts. Conductor Jonathan Nott guides through a programme that includes works by Schönberg, Ligeti, Webern and Strauss, as well as Wagner’s Wesendonk Lieder and Bruckner’s fourth symphony, both of the latter with baritone Matthias Goerne. The Haydn Orchestra, by now internationally successful thanks to its artistic director Gustav Kuhn, will take to the stage outdoors: at Semirurali Park in Bolzano’s Don Bosco quarter, William Lacey will conduct works by Rossini and Mendelssohn, promising a summer evening of exhilarating performances. The Gustav Mahler Academy, launched by Claudio Abbado, will dedicate its final evening to Mendelssohn’s anniversary and present two exceptional musical talents: the clarinettist Dario Mariño Varela and the conductor Diego Matheuz.
